Graduate students in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience and Neuroscience at OHSU are encouraged and welcome to participate in various outreach activities, in winter term at Portland State University as part of a teaching practicum course, and throughout the year in area public schools.

OHSU graduate students acquire valuable undergraduate teaching skills by preparing short mini-courses covering ongoing research on a topic of their choice (e.g., drug or alcohol use disorders, learning and memory, adolescent brain development, sleep, brain rhythms and consciousness, imaging techniques, epigenetics, pain), and by introducing advanced PSU undergraduates to currently funded work.
Our 2022 course was remote, and offered a tremendous opportunity to develop skills in online teaching. Post-pandemic courses have been hybrids, with both in person and online sessions. Our draft syllabus for winter 2025 is here:

Graduate students are also encouraged to participate in neuroscience outreach efforts in area public schools.
Throughout the year you can help supervise and mentor undergraduates, and help design and deliver high quality, creative, arts-integrated, collaboratively developed neuroscience programs to academic priority K-12 students in our community.
Whenever you get involved, students get excited about science, learn about their own developing brains, and see how to keep learning if this topic grabs them, from college to graduate school to jobs in teaching and research. You gain useful real world experience designing academic curricula, teaching students, and working directly with school professionals, undergraduates and kids..!
