Noggins & Kings

Going places, going places  –  putting yourself out there, listening, and sharing sciart and noggins brings so many benefits, opportunities, relationships and ideas..!

Last fall we traveled to San Diego for the annual Society for Neuroscience conference

We presented many posters, mentored exceptional young neuroscientists, and delivered the keynote address on Brain Awareness…

We also collaborated with accomplished graduate students from UC San Diego Neuroscience and with the talented teachers and staff at three San Diego Unified public schools to bring more real brains and compelling art projects into the classroom!

Hearing great questions and delving into topics suggested by the 400 K-8 students we met during an exciting two days of genuine #scicomm engagement was a highlight of SfN…

As we learn at SfN, there is a LOT of terrific innovative outreach going on around the globe, and we’re always excited to discover more

And we’re thrilled to hear that (sometimes) our own STEAM efforts can help motivate others, too!

We recently heard from Leigh Wilson and Richard Wingate, both developmental neuroscientists at Kings College London, who wrote: “We were really inspired by your talk at SfN in San Diego in November and just wanted to write to say how much we enjoy your work and your fab Noggin bloggin’!”

We…have a keen interest in school outreach. We have devised and delivered several neuroscience based projects in London and the UK, as well as international partnerships with a school south of Bangalore…”

“Richard is also the editor-in-chief of BrainFacts.org.”

Kings College London is launching a new initiative called the Health, Arts and Biosciences Lab (HAB Lab) which “aims to bring artists, students and scientists together to explore the entitled themes in a new space at our London Bridge based campus.”

According to Leigh and Richard, “…we tried your giant brain map at our workshop!”

“Here are some pics…”

What a brain!!

Looks like all the students could fit in the occipital lobe (in pink :). Check out the primary somatosensory cortex (S1, in red; a part of the parietal lobe) and the primary motor cortex (M1, in yellow; in the frontal lobe)!

“…it went really well. We talked about several different functions/regions and then asked the children to draw pictures on that represent the function. It was a lot of fun, so thank you!”

STAY TUNED: We’re now looking forward to joining Richard and Leigh in outreach visits during the upcoming Society for Neuroscience conference in Chicago this fall..!
