SUMMARY:NW Noggin @ He La High School
DESCRIPTION:WHAT:\nNW Noggin “Art and Brain Symposium” @ He La High School \nWHEN:\nFriday\, December 11\, 10am – 2pm \nWHERE:\nHe La High School\, 9105 NE 9th Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98664\nWe are invited to bring brains and art projects to He La High School on Friday\, December 11\, from 10am – 2pm! \nThe more the merrier\, as this will involve lots of kids. Students will rotate between a library\, where some of us will talk to them about brains for about 20 minutes/group\, and a lab\, where some of us will introduce real brains that students can examine and hold up close. We’ll likely have a third opportunity for students to try their hand at a brain-related art project as well…

SUMMARY:Noggin @ WSUV Kindergarten!
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to the WSU Vancouver campus kindergarten this morning!  The students (4 and 5) are currently engaged in what’s called the “Mind Up” program  –  according to Kelsey Day\, their teacher\, she has “already been talking to the children about the frontal cortex\, the amygdala\, and the hypothalamus..!” \n  \n\n\n\nWe should come prepared to talk/answer questions about these regions and how they develop and interact (e.g.\, how you have strong feelings/drives related to subcortical structures like amygdala\, and require frontal lobe networks  –  under construction!  –  to inhibit… 🙂 \n  \n\n \n\nJeff will bring a big drawing of the brain\, with some subcortical structures illustrated (particularly the amygdala and nucleus accumbens) –  then we can ask students (maybe in small groups?) to tell us when they’ve felt strong feelings (really angry\, or really motivated)  –  and whether they were able to control their feelings or not.  We can write down their examples on post-it notes and place those experiences directly on the areas of the brain involved. \n  \n\n\n\nThe class meets in the McClaskey Building\, Room 136. \n\n\nCheers!\nBill

SUMMARY:In Dialogue: Drugs\, Hallucinations\, Vision
DESCRIPTION:IN DIALOGUE: ART\, DRUGS\, AND THE NATURE OF SEEING\nNovember 8\, 2015 @ 11:30 am – 1:30 pm \nPortland Art Museum\, Trustee Room\, Mark Building \nCertain drugs provoke compelling visual distortions and hallucinations\, increase the intensity and salience of what you perceive\, depress areas of the brain that let you introspect\, and experience a personal sense of self\, and make the ordinary stand out powerfully as never before. Artists have intuitively manipulated these same systems to communicate emotional states and visual phenomena since first putting pigment on a cave wall. This session will bring together landscape art\, hallucination\, and the science of perception. \nA graduate of OHSU’s Behavioral Neuroscience program\, Bill Griesar\, PhD\, teaches neuroscience at Portland State University and WSU Vancouver. Jeff Leake holds an MA in Fine Arts from UC Davis and a BA in Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Bill and Jeff currently coteach an Art and the Brain course at WSU Vancouver and at PSU\, providing reference to visual arts and phenomena in relation to neuroscience. They also founded the volunteer art and neuroscience outreach program\, NW Noggin\, and routinely bring college students and brains to K-12 classrooms in Portland and Vancouver Public Schools.

SUMMARY:NW Noggin presents: PeaceHealth conference @ WSU Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:Bill Griesar\, Jeff Leake\, Michael Miller (PSU)\, James Reling (PSU)\, Lizzy Tremaine (PSU) and Brittany Wouden (WSUV) will present a collaborative 30 minute talk at the Jay D. Miller Conference at WSU Vancouver\, which is aimed at providing health care professionals with practical information on neuroscience… \nBrittany Wouden will introduce her innovative myBrain! program\, which lets viewers see a brain superimposed on an image of their own head\, and allows them to explore structure/function relationships… \n \nLizzy Tremaine will present data she acquired using the myBrain! app during our summer outreach effort through MESA at WSU Vancouver… \nWe believe that this program offers great promise for improving understanding of the brain and behavior\, not only for students\, but also for patients and patients’ families when trying to understand complex medical conditions involving the nervous system… \nThe conference will take place at WSU Vancouver…\nDengerink Administration Building-Cafeteria
