Science is…delving in.” –Sally Ride \nWHAT: March for Science PDX 2019 \nWe did it! \nSEE MORE AT THE LINK!! \nBrains to the Streets!\n \nSo many people asking questions\, inspired by young scientists\, holding brains! \n \nHmmm…this is no longer a free\, accessible\, exuberant outdoor March\, but an indoor “Science Fest\,” with admission charges (!). New post here..! \nTreating the whole person\n \n\nAll Brain Awareness Lectures take place at:\nThe Newmark Theatre\, 1111 SW Broadway\, Portland\nand begin at 7:00 p.m. \n\nPLEASE NOTE: NW Noggin volunteers expected for set up at 5:30pm! \n \n\nFor teens with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders\, the medication they need can also lead to an inactive lifestyle\, with potentially negative long-term health effects. Can simple activities like yoga\, meditation and cooking meals offset medication side effects and reduce psychotic symptoms? \nLynne Shinto\, N.D.\, M.P.H\, is a Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)\, Portland\, Oregon. Her research focuses on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of complementary and integrative therapies in health conditions that include Alzheimer’s disease\, dementia prevention\, multiple sclerosis\, and first episode psychosis in youth. Her expertise in research methodology include the design of single-agent studies to complex lifestyle interventions. \nDr. Shinto is the Principal Investigator on a number of NIH-funded studies that include a Career Development award (NCCIH formerly known as NCCAM) and NIA-funded R01s. In addition\, she has received funding from the National MS Society (NMSS) and the OHSU Foundation. \nDr. Shinto received her ND from Bastyr University in 2000 and her MPH from OHSU in 2006. She is a member of the National MS Society’s Wellness in MS Research Committee whose task is to inform and outline guidelines for research on diet\, physical activity\, and emotional wellness in people with MS. She is the naturopathic provider at OHSU’s Center for Women’s Health Integrative Medicine Clinic\, and has served as a reviewer for NCCIH\, NIA\, NMSS\, and the Department of Defense. \n \nWe brought along 37 outreach volunteers!! \nCOMMITTED PARTICIPANTS\n1. Discover more at the link… \n \nA less self-centered and more creative life\n \n\nAll Brain Awareness Lectures take place at:\nThe Newmark Theatre\, 1111 SW Broadway\, Portland\nand begin at 7:00 p.m. \n\nPLEASE NOTE: NW Noggin volunteers expected for set up at 5:30pm! \n \nCould the ancient practice of using psychedelic compounds for insight and healing have a legitimate and safe role in today’s health care? For many people\, receiving a fatal diagnosis leads to psychological suffering\, including anxiety and depression. Discover the intriguing implications of psilocybin-facilitated experiences in offering a sense of connection\, meaning and transcendence at the end of life. \nAnthony P. Bossis\, Ph.D.\, conducts FDA-approved clinical trials in the reemerging field of psychedelic research. He is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine investigating the effects of psilocybin\, a naturally occurring compound found in specific species of mushrooms. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research\, co-principal investigator\, and session guide on the 2016 landmark clinical trial showing a significant reduction in psychological distress along with enhanced existential well-being from a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in persons with cancer. He is also lead investigator on a trial evaluating psilocybin-generated mystical experience upon religious leaders. Subjective features of a mystical experience include unity\, sacredness\, transcendence\, and a greater awareness of deeply felt positive emotions including that of love. \nDr. Bossis is a supervisor of psychotherapy at NYU-Bellevue Hospital Center and co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Hospital Palliative Care Service. He has a long-standing interest in comparative religion\, consciousness research\, and the interface of psychology and spirituality. Lee\, and Jiang Peiyuan \nWHERE: Ying Gallery\, No.258-2-1 Cao Chang Di Village\, Cui Ge Zhuang\, Chao Yang District\, Beijing\, China 100015 \nWHEN: Saturday\, August 24\, 2019 \n \nNW Noggin Art Coordinator Jeff Leake is currently on a three month arts residency in Shanghai\, China\, the recipient of the 2019 Arte Laguna Prize. \n \n \nLEARN MORE: Jeff Leake wins Arte Laguna Prize! \nHe will be showing some of his recent work at the Ying Gallery in Beijing\, along with artists Jamie M. Lee and Jiang Peiyuan\, at the opening for the “Three Lines” exhibit at the Ying Gallery in Beijing on August 24. \n \nRed Crowned Crane  56X36cm oil on wood\, 2019\, by Jeff Leake \n \nFrom Jeff: “One theme that runs through much of my work is the difference between the intended message of the stories and symbols we we use to convey cultural ideals\, and how we really interact with our environment and each other. This group of paintings is\, to varying degrees influenced by my experience here in China\, and in a general sense can be seen as a reflection on the complexity of cultural interactions.” \n \nEasel painters 50×29 cm oil on wood\, 2019\, by Jeff Leake \n“While I have particular things I am thinking while making these\, I am always interested to hear the stories that viewers come up with\, as such these panels are cut into stylized cloud shapes conveying the notion that what we see in the clouds often reveals something true about ourselves.” \n \nIf your brain is in Beijing this summer\, you are hugely welcome to drop by the Ying Gallery\, see art and speak with Jeff\, Jamie and Jiang..! Last year\, she obtained a PhD in Painting\, Fine Art from Hongik University in Seoul\, South Korea. \n \nFrom Jamie: “My intent is to create an emotional language of abstract painting and mixed media installation\, using a rich vocabulary of imagery that emerges from personal memories and dreams. My work evolves without sketches or preconceived designs\, which results in a spontaneous and forceful effect. The images are then transferred on canvas as a story between reality and the subconscious.” \n \nJiang Peiyuan Graduated from Chelsea college of art in UAL with MA in Fine Art. Jiang Peiyuan has been widely selected of numerous awards and artist residencies including Swatch Art Peace Hotel residency in Shanghai (2019)\, Chris Wainwright Award in Beijing Today Art Museum(2012)\, JohnMoores Painting Prize 2012 (China)\, Bloomberg New contemporaries (2009)\, Jerwood Drawing Prize (2009)\, Whisper Residency in Chinese Art Cerntre Manchester (2009)\, BP young artist award in National Portrait gallery (2008)\, He has been widely exhibitied in many museums including AMNUA\, Nanjing. Create your own neurons out of pipe cleaners!\nMaterials: pipe cleaners (12″ minimum length\, multiple colors\, both standard and sparkly\, at least 20 pipe cleaners/brain cell)\nDETAILED INSTRUCTIONS: MAKE Pipe Cleaner Neurons\nNoggin Lead: Denesa Lockwood\, OHSU\nGel and collagraph neuron prints\nThese networks of linked brain cells resemble forms found elsewhere in nature. DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Fireside Chat with Dr. Vivek Murthy following the Social Neuroscience Fair at the Society for Social Neuroscience (S4SN) conference! \nWHERE: West Pavilion Auditorium\, Museum of Science & Industry Chicago\, 5700 S Lake Shore Drive\, Chicago\, IL 60637 \nWHEN: Thursday\, October 17\, 2019\, 5:30pm – 6:45pm \n \nDr. Vivek H. Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States appointed by President Barack Obama. As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps\, he commanded a uniformed service of 6\,600 public health officers globally. During his tenure\, Dr. Murthy launched the TurnTheTide campaign\, catalyzing a movement among health professionals to address the nation’s opioid crisis. He also issued the first Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol\, Drugs\, and Health\, calling for expanded access to prevention and treatment and for recognizing addiction as a chronic illness\, not a character flaw. An internal medicine physician and entrepreneur.  In 2017\, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and isolation as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health\, productivity\, and happiness. He has co-founded a number of organizations: VISIONS\, an HIV/AIDS education program in India; Swasthya\, a community health partnership in rural India training women as health providers and educators; software company TrialNetworks; and Doctors for America. \n\nDr. Murthy received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard and his M.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Yale. He completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and later joined Harvard Medical School as faculty in internal medicine. His research focused on vaccine development and later on the participation of women and minorities in clinical trials.  Dr. Murthy resides in Washington\, D.C. with his wife Dr. Alice Chen and their two young children.
