SUMMARY:Noggin/UCSD Outreach to San Diego Public Schools!
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to bring our graduate and undergraduate volunteers in neuroscience and art\, from Oregon Health & Science University\, Portland State University\, and Washington State University in Vancouver\, into classrooms at Jefferson and Linda Vista elementary schools during the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) conference in San Diego this month..! \n\n\nWe did it! Learn more…\n\n\nCortical Connections in San Diego Schools!\n \n\nNoggin will bring ten volunteers\, and UCSD will join us with 2 – 3 additional volunteers and some human and animal brains!  Emma Lindberg from SfN will join us with brainfacts.org resources for both schools.  We will also welcome additional artists and art students through ArtReach\, to help engage students with a pipe cleaner neuron project… \n\n\nMAKE YOUR OWN NEURONSLEARN MORE:  pipe-cleaner-neuron-project-backgroundCREATE:  how-to-make-a-pipe-cleaner-neuron \n\nAs it stands now\, our visit on Tuesday (11/15) will proceed as follows… \n\n\n7:45am\nRide to Jefferson Elementary from two locations by San Diego Public Schools volunteers… \nPICKUP LOCATION ONE:  Omni San Diego (675 L St\, San Diego\, CA 92101) John Harkness\, Alex Camino\, Allie Clark\, Alfredo Zuniga\, Jordan Blacktop \nPICKUP LOCATION TWO:  Horton Grand Hotel (311 Island Ave\, San Diego\, CA 92101) Morgan Wirthlin\, Andre Walcott\, Scott Jones\, Rebecca Hood \n8:10am – 8:40am\nPreparation and set up @ Jefferson \n8:45am – 10:10am\nWe’ll be introducing ourselves to about 100 students – just knowing who our graduates and undergraduates are\, where and what they study\, why they do the research they do\, how they got interested and inspired to learn more about the brain and behavior\, is powerful experience. \nAfter introductions\, we’ll ask kids what they know already about the brain. We want to guide the conversation to what brains are made of – cells! – and how remarkable\, diverse\, unique and numerous these cells happen to be. We’ll ask questions like: how many neurons do you think you have? Do you have more than your teachers\, or parents? How does the number of cells relate to what you can do? \nWe’ll also point out how neurons link together to form networks\, to channel information along specific paths. Different networks do different things\, including what you hear\, see\, think\, remember\, feel\, pay attention to\, and decide. Neural networks are critical\, and that’s what kids refine as they experience their classroom\, family life\, the world. Many of these cells die off\, while others build stronger connections\, routing information in more useful and productive ways that let them accomplish more… \nThen we’ll look at real brains! UCSD is sending 2-3 of their own undergraduate outreach volunteers with both human and animal brains for students to examine\, plus some additional sheep brains that the students will be able to hold. Our volunteers will help introduce different parts of the brain\, pointing out where important structures are\, answering questions\,… \nAfter brain viewing\, students will get pipe cleaners\, and will start building their own brain cells\, complete with cell bodies\, dendrites\, axons\, myelin\, nucleus\, even DNA. Noggin volunteers will sit with groups of students and artist participants from Artreach\, and build cells\, while answering questions about neurons\, synapses and the brain… \n\n\n10:10am – 10:30am\nTravel to Linda Vista Elementary; again\, by volunteer drivers from San Diego Public Schools \n10:30am – 10:55am\nPreparation and set up @ Linda Vista \n10:55am – 12:35pm\nAt Linda Vista\, we’ll be introducing ourselves to about 150 students! We’ll proceed in the same way here… 🙂 \n12:35pm\nRide back to the Convention Center \n\n\n\nCONFIRMED NOGGIN VOLUNTEERS\n1. John Harkness\, WSU\n2. Jordan Blacktop\, WSU\n3. Alexandria Camino\, WSU\n4. Ram Kandasamy\, WSU\n5. Scott Jones\, OHSU\n6. Alfredo Zuniga\, OHSU\n7. Rebecca Hood\, OHSU\n8. Andre Walcott\, OHSU\n9. Morgan Wirthlin\, CMU\n10. Allie Clark\, PSU

SUMMARY:artNOW
DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition:This January and February\, twelve Portlanders attended the Museum’s artNOW program designed for individuals living with dementia and their care-partners. On four consecutive Monday afternoons\, the group explored the idea of personal journeys through lively discussion of the art on view and created visual journals that will be exhibited in the Museum’s Object Stories gallery this summer (on view May 14-September 10\,) along with recorded reflections from each pair. The journals beautifully depict each artist’s connection to the environment\, cities\, each other\, and ultimately their idea of homeAbout the event:Please join us for an opening celebration on Friday\, June 10th from 4:00-6:00 pm\, which coincides with Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. Meet the artists\, create connections\, and learn how you can engage with the Museum!  The artNOW program was designed in partnership with the Oregon Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
