SUMMARY:"Four" an exhibit of PNCA graduate students at Gallery 114
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 114 Hosts PNCA Exhibit \nAs part of an ongoing collaboration with the Pacific Northwest College of Art\, in February Gallery 114 hosts a show of MFA candidates entitled “Four.”  Four PNCA graduate students present paintings\, prints\, and installation work in a show curated by Maximiliano Martinez\, MFA candidate in visual studies.  “Four” runs February 2 through February 25\, with a First Thursday opening reception for the artists February 2\, 6-9 pm.  Regular gallery hours are noon to 6 pm Thursday through Sunday. \nGallery 114 artist Jeff Leake organized the first PNCA exhibit last year of Print Media students and coordinated this year’s show as well.  Maximiliano Martinez\, who curates the show\, is one of his former students. \n“Four” features the work of Carla G. Javier-Brea\, Aruni Dharmakirthi\, Melanie Stevens\, and Angelica Maria Millan Lozano.  The exhibit is about roots and rootlessness\, leaving and arriving\, says curator Martinez. “It’s about the people we love\, it’s about the hands we grew up holding\, it’s about story\, it’s about who has been telling story\, . . it’s about our myths.” \nCarla G. Javier-Brea is studying for an MFA in Print Media.  She spent many years traveling and living in the Dominican Republic\, where her parents were born.  While living in the Dominican Republic she pursued a career in Advertising and Visual Communication at the Universidad Ibero-Americana.  There she first encountered analog photography and explored developing and printing her own film.  These pursuits led her to explore all parts of her island\, seeking subject matter\, engaging strangers in conversation and then snapping their portraits. Much of her work reflects her roots in the Dominican Republic\, its mythology and folklore.  She describes her art as an exploration of self\, her multi-cultural background\, family mythology and traditions\, superstitions and childhood memories. \nAruni Dharmakirthi is a Sri Lankan artist based in Portland\, who earned a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Florida State University and is completing an MFA in Visual Studies. Aruni is co-founder and curator at SoftSpacepdx\, a video+new media project space that creates a platform for emerging artists. Aruni’s work uses digital animation and fibers to create installations that move back and forth in time\, exploring known and untold histories. The political and the personal come together to recall the journey of migration\, connecting it to the tragedies of colonization and the continued violence of imperialism. These histories are re-imagined into digital culture\, blurring the lines between contemporary and traditional\, eastern and western. \nMelanie Stevens is an artist\, illustrator\, and writer from Atlanta\, Georgia.  She received her BA in Political Science from Yale University in 2001 and created the graphic novel\, Black Picket Fences.  She is also co-founder and editor of Miss Anthology\, an organization that supports racially and economically diverse young\, female comic artists through hands-on training in workshops and publishing online and in print.  Stevens creates public installations and interactions that examine the experiences of people of color\, and what she calls “the unspoken and hidden perceptions and power dynamics wielded against them.  I challenge audiences\,” claims Stevens\, “by presenting work that mimics the constructs of psychological implications of access and privilege.” \nAngelica Maria Millan Lozano is a fiber and performance artist from Bogota\, Colombia\, who moved to Portland to work on an MFA in Visual Studies.  Her work questions the ethical implications of social injustices that affect Latinas in the home.  She creates abstract and figurative compositions on distressed fabrics\, juxtaposing various remnants that symbolize her experiences of Colombian and American cultures. \n \nThere will be an opening reception at Gallery 114 from 6-8 pm on Thursday February 2nd.

SUMMARY:Marijuana: Fact or Fiction. Art\, Pain\, and Cannabinoids
DESCRIPTION:WHAT:  “Marijuana: Fact or Fiction. Art\, Pain\, and Cannabinoids\,” Sponsored by the Washington Academy of General Dentistry \nWHERE:  Washington AGD Educational Center\, Heyamoto Conference Room\, 19415 International Blvd\, #410\, SeaTac\, WA 98188 \nWHEN:  Saturday\, January 21\, 2017\, 8:00am – 5:00pm \n \nCourse Outline:\nCannabis\, marijuana\, is legal in the states of Washington\, Oregon\, and Colorado for both medical and recreational use. Is it as benign as proponents say? No. Are the warnings of “Reefer Madness” true? No. On January 21st\, 2017 at the Washington AGD Educational Center we will talk about what is true about the benefits of medical marijuana. We will also talk about the harm it can do\, especially to young people. This discussion is based on current science. \nFew dentists or other healthcare practitioners understand what cannabis does\, positive or negative. The cannabinoid system in the human body is enormously important in controlling such diverse mechanisms as pain\, mood\, and inflammation. Hacking this system with cannabis drugs can be beneficial and it can be dangerous. Learn how it works and what we actually know. In the morning David Carsten\, DDS\, MAGD\, Dentist Anesthesiologist will explain the essentials of the pharmacology and physiology of cannabis. He will talk about the relevance to treatment both from a dentist’s perspective and an anesthesiologist’s perspective. Blaine Chatterton is a chronic pain patient and marijuana consultant. He will talk about his real life experience and his experience as a consultant for people seeking relief. In the afternoon\, Bill Griesar\, PhD\, Neuroscience WSU Vancouver and Psychology\, Portland State University will lead an exploration of the science of cannabinoids. Included is Jeff Leake\, MFA\, who will speak regarding the effect of these drugs on artists developing works of art. Ram Kandasamy\, PhD\, Neuroscience\, WSU Vancouver will discuss his latest research on cannabinoids. Cole Dawson\, undergraduate\, WSU Vancouver\, will be leading an examination of brain specimens. At the end of the day there will be a panel discussion to answer your questions. The most critical information that we all should know as doctors\, patients\, and parents will be available to you. \nLearning Objectives:\nLearners will hear about the history\, pharmacology\, and physiology of cannabis\nParticipants will examine the various uses and abuses\, the benefits and dangers of cannabis.\nParticipants will learn about practical implications of cannabis use.\nParticipants will hear about examples of medical marijuana use today.\nParticipants will hear about the real life experience of a chronic pain patient.\nParticipants will learn of the complexity and variability of drug content.\nParticipants will have a clear grasp of where cannabis acts in the brain and how this might relate to various therapeutic effects\, including pain reduction.\nParticipants will gain an understanding of the long history of cultivation\, artistic use\, and medical use of marijuana.\nParticipants will be able to examine brain specimens to gain a hands-on appreciation of how this family of drugs work. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION:  “Marijuana: Fact or Fiction. SUMMARY:Cerebral Wilderness Artwork: Gallery 114
DESCRIPTION:Come join us Thursday\, December 1\, from 6 – 9pm at Gallery 114! \n \n \nWHAT:  Cerebral Wilderness Artwork \nWHERE:  Gallery 114\, 11oo NW Glisan Street\, Portland\, OR 97209 \nWHEN:  First Thursday\, December 1\, 6:00 – 9:00pm \nFor over a year Leake and Crick have been working together as artists with NW Noggin\, a neuroscience outreach group.  In this show\, Cerebral Wilderness\, they examine memory\, place and its impact on one’s inner and outer identity. While Leake looks outward towards the horizon  depicting remembered and invented landscapes\, Crick’s work turns inward\, magnifying and reimagining the hidden molecular structures of the mind. \nKindra Crick is an artist who gives visual expression to the wonder and process of scientific inquiry and discovery. In her installations and layered mixed-media work\, she incorporates drawings\, diagrams\, maps and imagery from under the microscope. Her work has been influenced by the inspired marriage of her grandparents\, the scientist Francis Crick and the artist Odile Crick. Her work is included in the LMB collection in Cambridge\, England with exhibitions at the New York Hall of Science and MDI Biological Laboratory. Her work has been featured in Science Magazine\, The Huffington Post\, SciArt in America and Oregon Arts Watch. As part of NW Noggin\, Kindra created a neuroscience-inspired installation for the Phillips Collection in D.C.\, and another that accompanied a lecture at the Portland Art Museum. She lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. \nA California Bay Area native\, Jeff Leake holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from UC Davis. In the tradition of fabulists such as Aesop and Jean de La Fontaine\, his current work uses animal imagery and landscape to explore human relationships. Fascinated with the origin and nature of these inner landscapes\, he  currently works with neuroscience faculty at Washington State University Vancouver and Portland State University to teach art and neuroscience there and around the Portland area.  Along the way he has shown nationally and internationally. He now lives and works in sunny Portland\, Oregon with his wife\, kids and three dogs. \nLEARN MORE:  NW Noggin Artist Talk with Brains Saturday\, December 10th\, 7 – 8:30pm!

Learn more…\n\n\nCortical Connections in San Diego Schools!\n \n\nNoggin will bring ten volunteers\, and UCSD will join us with 2 – 3 additional volunteers and some human and animal brains!  Emma Lindberg from SfN will join us with brainfacts.org resources for both schools.  We will also welcome additional artists and art students through ArtReach\, to help engage students with a pipe cleaner neuron project… \n\n\nMAKE YOUR OWN NEURONSLEARN MORE:  pipe-cleaner-neuron-project-backgroundCREATE:  how-to-make-a-pipe-cleaner-neuron \n\nAs it stands now\, our visit on Tuesday (11/15) will proceed as follows… \n\n\n7:45am\nRide to Jefferson Elementary from two locations by San Diego Public Schools volunteers… \nPICKUP LOCATION ONE:  Omni San Diego (675 L St\, San Diego\, CA 92101) John Harkness\, Alex Camino\, Allie Clark\, Alfredo Zuniga\, Jordan Blacktop \nPICKUP LOCATION TWO:  Horton Grand Hotel (311 Island Ave\, San Diego\, CA 92101) Morgan Wirthlin\, Andre Walcott\, Scott Jones\, Rebecca Hood \n8:10am – 8:40am\nPreparation and set up @ Jefferson \n8:45am – 10:10am\nWe’ll be introducing ourselves to about 100 students – just knowing who our graduates and undergraduates are\, where and what they study\, why they do the research they do\, how they got interested and inspired to learn more about the brain and behavior\, is powerful experience. \nAfter introductions\, we’ll ask kids what they know already about the brain. We want to guide the conversation to what brains are made of – cells! – and how remarkable\, diverse\, unique and numerous these cells happen to be. We’ll ask questions like: how many neurons do you think you have? Do you have more than your teachers\, or parents? How does the number of cells relate to what you can do? \nWe’ll also point out how neurons link together to form networks\, to channel information along specific paths. Different networks do different things\, including what you hear\, see\, think\, remember\, feel\, pay attention to\, and decide. Neural networks are critical\, and that’s what kids refine as they experience their classroom\, family life\, the world. Many of these cells die off\, while others build stronger connections\, routing information in more useful and productive ways that let them accomplish more… \nThen we’ll look at real brains! UCSD is sending 2-3 of their own undergraduate outreach volunteers with both human and animal brains for students to examine\, plus some additional sheep brains that the students will be able to hold. Our volunteers will help introduce different parts of the brain\, pointing out where important structures are\, answering questions\,… \nAfter brain viewing\, students will get pipe cleaners\, and will start building their own brain cells\, complete with cell bodies\, dendrites\, axons\, myelin\, nucleus\, even DNA. Noggin volunteers will sit with groups of students and artist participants from Artreach\, and build cells\, while answering questions about neurons\, synapses and the brain… \n\n\n10:10am – 10:30am\nTravel to Linda Vista Elementary; again\, by volunteer drivers from San Diego Public Schools \n10:30am – 10:55am\nPreparation and set up @ Linda Vista \n10:55am – 12:35pm\nAt Linda Vista\, we’ll be introducing ourselves to about 150 students! We’ll proceed in the same way here… 🙂 \n12:35pm\nRide back to the Convention Center \n\n\n\nCONFIRMED NOGGIN VOLUNTEERS\n1. John Harkness\, WSU\n2. Jordan Blacktop\, WSU\n3.
