Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States appointed by President Barack Obama. As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps\, he commanded a uniformed service of 6\,600 public health officers globally. During his tenure\, Dr. Murthy launched the TurnTheTide campaign\, catalyzing a movement among health professionals to address the nation’s opioid crisis. He also issued the first Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol\, Drugs\, and Health\, calling for expanded access to prevention and treatment and for recognizing addiction as a chronic illness\, not a character flaw. An internal medicine physician and entrepreneur.  In 2017\, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and isolation as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health\, productivity\, and happiness. He has co-founded a number of organizations: VISIONS\, an HIV/AIDS education program in India; Swasthya\, a community health partnership in rural India training women as health providers and educators; software company TrialNetworks; and Doctors for America. \n\nDr. Murthy received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard and his M.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Yale. He completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and later joined Harvard Medical School as faculty in internal medicine. The public pays for research\, yet many lack access to useful findings. \nNonprofit NW Noggin (nwnoggin.org) organizes undergraduates and graduates to collaborate\, build community networks and inspire people about neuroscience and the arts. Volunteers benefit from work across disciplines and institutions\, serve as “near peer” role models\, gain skill explaining research\, and think creatively about careers. We’ve met over 30\,000 people since 2012! \nTeenagers undergo dramatic\, consequential change in brain anatomy and function\, responding to environments and making mistakes. How others react impacts development\, benefiting or undermining the trajectory of young lives. \nThe social rules we learn in adolescence are complex. They depend on who you are\, including race\, sex\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, class\, neighborhood\, national origin and a host of other factors. Research also highlights the significant ethnic and income differences in youth and lifetime experiences of trauma.\nYet in 1994\, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 11\, which established mandatory minimum sentences for “serious crimes against persons” and required defendants aged 15 and older to be tried as adults. Oregon now has one of the highest youth incarceration rates in the country. Native American\, Hispanic and Black Oregonians are incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates relative to white people. \nTeenagers are not adults. This year we worked with the Hope Partnership and the Oregon Youth Authority to bring NW Noggin volunteers to the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility\, where over 200 boys and young men (ages 12 – 25) are confined. We enjoyed powerful discussions about the brain basis of trauma\, anxiety\, and emotional regulation\, bias in judicial and law enforcement systems\, pathways in psychology for counseling and research\, and what role neuroscientists play\, or might play\, in judicial and legislative reform. At our core\, when we think about who we are\, we rely on a confluence of evolving narratives we remember. \nFor an exploration of memory\, join NW Noggin Brain Board members artist Kindra Crick and Legacy Research Institute (LRI) neuroscientist Dr. John Harkness this Thursday. \nMemory: Cerebral Entanglement started in late 2015 as a NW Noggin collaboration between Kindra Crick and LRI neuroscientist Dr. John Harkness who was researching memory in Dr. Barbara Sorg’s Legacy Research Institute Lab. Included in this exhibit are three microscopic images taken from the lab’s latest research. \nDr. Harkness investigates net-like structures called perineuronal nets which surround neurons in our brain and are associated with memory retention and the close of developmental learning windows. Although these net-like structures were documented over a hundred years ago by Italian neuroscientist Camillo Golgi\, their role in our memories is only beginning to be understood. Golgi described this scaffolding outside the neuron as a “kind of corset.” That description was the inspiration for sculptural materials. To echo Golgi\, each neuron is ensnared in netted fabric that shimmers in its delicate embrace of scraps of memory held within each synaptic connection. \nOn hand dyed kozo paper\, ink portraits of untangled\, overlapping individual neurons dance around the gallery walls.
