Sunday (10/20) from 9:00am – 10:00am. Come join us! \nWe did it!\n \n \n \nNW Noggin: Corrections\, bias and brains\nAuthors *W. S. GRIESAR1\,3\,4\, J. J. LEAKE4\,2;\n1Psychology/Neuroscience\, 2Univ. Studies\, Portland State Univ.\, Portland\, OR; 3Behavioral Neurosci.\, Oregon Hlth. & Sci. Univ.\, Portland\, OR; 4Art & Neurosci.\, NW Noggin\, Portland\, OR \n“All is in motion\, is growing\, is you” – Joy Harjo \nScience needs investment and diverse perspectives\, and integrating arts in STEM (STEAM) encourages people to get involved. The public pays for research\, yet many lack access to useful findings. \nNonprofit NW Noggin (nwnoggin.org) organizes undergraduates and graduates to collaborate\, build community networks and inspire people about neuroscience and the arts. Volunteers benefit from work across disciplines and institutions\, serve as “near peer” role models\, gain skill explaining research\, and think creatively about careers. We’ve met over 30\,000 people since 2012! \nTeenagers undergo dramatic\, consequential change in brain anatomy and function\, responding to environments and making mistakes. How others react impacts development\, benefiting or undermining the trajectory of young lives. \nThe social rules we learn in adolescence are complex. They depend on who you are\, including race\, sex\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, class\, neighborhood\, national origin and a host of other factors. Research also highlights the significant ethnic and income differences in youth and lifetime experiences of trauma.\nYet in 1994\, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 11\, which established mandatory minimum sentences for “serious crimes against persons” and required defendants aged 15 and older to be tried as adults. Oregon now has one of the highest youth incarceration rates in the country. Native American\, Hispanic and Black Oregonians are incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates relative to white people. \nTeenagers are not adults. This year we worked with the Hope Partnership and the Oregon Youth Authority to bring NW Noggin volunteers to the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility\, where over 200 boys and young men (ages 12 – 25) are confined. We enjoyed powerful discussions about the brain basis of trauma\, anxiety\, and emotional regulation\, bias in judicial and law enforcement systems\, pathways in psychology for counseling and research\, and what role neuroscientists play\, or might play\, in judicial and legislative reform. MacLaren youth are studying the law and neuroscience in order to bolster a case for changes to Measure 11. \nBuilding excitement and awareness of discoveries\, educational options and careers through arts-integrated outreach across institutional\, state\, federal and generational lines trains new scientists to collaborate\, brings useful\, actionable knowledge to underserved communities\, and increases awareness and support for investment in brain research and the arts. \n \nLEARN MORE: Myelinating at MacLaren \nLEARN MORE: All is in motion\, is growing\, is you \nLEARN MORE: Corrections\, Bias & Brains

Dr. Fadiman is a leading psychologist\, psychedelic researcher\, writer and co-founder of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now Sofia University). \n \nJames Fadiman with Aaron Eisen\, the NW Noggin Resource Council member for Communications  –  and a pipe cleaner neuron! From Aaron: “He asked about the neurons/NW Noggin and thought it was absolutely wonderful! He said a lot of PhD students stuck in labs could benefit from building pipe cleaner neurons and helping to educate youth!” \n \nLEARN MORE: Might Microdosing Psychedelics Be Safe and Beneficial? An Initial Exploration \n \n“Thus began a third phase of psychedelic research…Whereas\, in the first phase the participant’s experiences tended to be controlled and delimited\, even if inadvertently\, by the experimenter’s and the subject’s preconceptions\, and in the second phase to be more uncontrolled and wide-ranging in scope\, the emphasis now was on the selection of specific kinds of psychedelic experience and of specific ways to produce and maintain them.” — James Fadiman \n \nAaron\, Cam\, Sai\, Philip and Denesa made pipe cleaner neurons\, heard from leading researchers in the field\, examined real human brains\, and discussed the actions and effects of psychedelics with conference attendees… \n \n \n \n \n \nAuthor\, psychologist\, researcher\, and university co-founder James Fadiman with a rainbow noggin: Can’t think of a more appropriate 3D printed brain! \n \nLEARN MORE about psychedelics from Anthony Bossis… \nA less self-centered and more creative life

SUMMARY:Reception for “MEMORY: Cerebral Entanglement”
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition you will find yourself beneath an imagined landscape of the brain. Dendritic arms made of fabric-wrapped wire reach out to create an experience of neuroplasticity. \n\n\n\n \nWHAT:  Reception for “MEMORY: Cerebral Entanglement” an art installation by Kindra Crick \n WHERE: Dengerink Gallery at WSU (Vancouver) 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave\, Vancouver\, WA \nWHEN:  Thursday\, November 14th from 5:30 – 8:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the greatest mysteries of the mind is our memory\, the ability to time-travel and use recollections\, whether conscious or not\, to shape our future choices. At our core\, when we think about who we are\, we rely on a confluence of evolving narratives we remember. \nFor an exploration of memory\, join NW Noggin Brain Board members artist Kindra Crick and Legacy Research Institute (LRI) neuroscientist Dr. John Harkness this Thursday. \nMemory: Cerebral Entanglement started in late 2015 as a NW Noggin collaboration between Kindra Crick and LRI neuroscientist Dr. John Harkness who was researching memory in Dr. Barbara Sorg’s Legacy Research Institute Lab. Included in this exhibit are three microscopic images taken from the lab’s latest research. \nDr. Harkness investigates net-like structures called perineuronal nets which surround neurons in our brain and are associated with memory retention and the close of developmental learning windows. Although these net-like structures were documented over a hundred years ago by Italian neuroscientist Camillo Golgi\, their role in our memories is only beginning to be understood. Golgi described this scaffolding outside the neuron as a “kind of corset.” That description was the inspiration for sculptural materials. To echo Golgi\, each neuron is ensnared in netted fabric that shimmers in its delicate embrace of scraps of memory held within each synaptic connection. \nOn hand dyed kozo paper\, ink portraits of untangled\, overlapping individual neurons dance around the gallery walls. This is a small sample of the 86 billion neurons which\, when networked and active\, help generate our every sensation and thought. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIdeas Spreading: untangled ink portraits of neurons on hand dyed kozo paper\n\n\n\nIn magnifying and re-imagining these hidden molecular structures\, Kindra’s aim is to evoke the wonder of discovery and offer an imagined vision of the spectacular biological machinery which may comprise the very core of our memories and our essential sense of self. \nExhibition runs: September 9\, 2019 – January 6\, 2020 \nGallery hours weekdays (M – Th) from 7am – 10pm and Friday from 7am – 5pm and is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUndergraduates enjoying the MEMORY art installation

DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Noggin visit with 4th graders at Sunnyside Environmental School\, Portland Public Schools \nWe did it!\nLEARN MORE AT THE LINK…\n \nWhat about the glia?\n \nWHERE: Sunnyside Environmental School\, 3421 SE Salmon St\, Portland\, OR 97214 \nWHEN: Thursday\, November 21\, 2019\, 12:30 – 3:00pm \nContact: Asa Gervich\, 4th Grade Teacher\, Sunnyside Environmental School \n \n12:30 – 1:00pm: Arrival at school office and set up\n1:00 – 2:00pm: First group of 27 4th graders\, Room 205 (Asa Gervich)\n2:00 – 3:00pm: Second group of 28 4th graders\, Room 203 (Jeremy Thomas) \nFrom Asa: “Our 4th graders have background knowledge about how the Prefrontal Cortex\, Amygdala\, and Hippocampus play roles in cultivating self-regulation (see Dr. Dan Siegel hand model\, “flipping one’s lid”\, etc)\, and have also learned a bit about how this idea of “Growth Mindset” is actually supported by brain science\, and what we know about how new neural pathways get formed…” \n \n“Anything that supports these concepts would be awesome – a lot of what we talk about around brains and neuroscience is related to self-regulation (something we’re all working on!) and how new learning happens in the brain. In our brainstorm\, my students were super curious and fascinated by how new learning\, new information\, actually gets wired/stored in their brains! I’m thinking that the pipe-cleaner neuron modeling looks very interesting!” \n \nSunnyside encourages a place-based approach to education. “Place-based education differs from traditional classroom-based education in that it is founded on the belief that students’ local community as one of the most important resources for learning. Place-based education at Sunnyside Environmental school means that part of the student learning experience is spent beyond the walls of the actual school building. Natural spaces\, local neighborhoods\, museums\, our own school yard and university campuses are just a few places where our students learn in place. These locations provide a canvas upon which elements of history\, environmental education\, scientific and biological relationships\, culture\, mathematics\, economy\, literature\, and art are used to help children authentically make meaning of the world around them.” \n \nWe thoroughly agree! We don’t expect K-12 students to come to us; we volunteer and go where people study\, work\, live  –  and listen\, learn\, discover\, make art\, share stories (and brains!)  –  and genuinely connect… \nLEARN MORE: Honest selves @ Hosford \n \nCOMMITTED VOLUNTEERS\nBill Griesar\, NW Noggin/PSU/OHSU\nJeff Leake\, NW Noggin/PSU/Gallery 114\nAaron Eisen\, NW Noggin/NUNM\nPaul Delahanty\, PSU\nMichael Deveney\, PSU\nAngela Hendrix\, NW Noggin\nJacob Schoen\, OHSU
