SUMMARY:Noggin @ OHSU Brain Awareness lecture: Anthony Bossis
DESCRIPTION:Magic mushrooms: Easing depression and anxiety at end of life\n \n\nMAY 20\, 2019 \nAnthony P. Bossis\, Ph.D.\nClinical Assistant Professor of Psychology\, NYU Langone Health \nNEW POST! Discover more at the link… \n \nA less self-centered and more creative life\n \n\nAll Brain Awareness Lectures take place at:\nThe Newmark Theatre\, 1111 SW Broadway\, Portland\nand begin at 7:00 p.m. \n\nPLEASE NOTE: NW Noggin volunteers expected for set up at 5:30pm! \n \nCould the ancient practice of using psychedelic compounds for insight and healing have a legitimate and safe role in today’s health care? For many people\, receiving a fatal diagnosis leads to psychological suffering\, including anxiety and depression. Discover the intriguing implications of psilocybin-facilitated experiences in offering a sense of connection\, meaning and transcendence at the end of life. \nAnthony P. Bossis\, Ph.D.\, conducts FDA-approved clinical trials in the reemerging field of psychedelic research. He is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine investigating the effects of psilocybin\, a naturally occurring compound found in specific species of mushrooms. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research\, co-principal investigator\, and session guide on the 2016 landmark clinical trial showing a significant reduction in psychological distress along with enhanced existential well-being from a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in persons with cancer. He is also lead investigator on a trial evaluating psilocybin-generated mystical experience upon religious leaders. Subjective features of a mystical experience include unity\, sacredness\, transcendence\, and a greater awareness of deeply felt positive emotions including that of love. \nDr. Bossis is a supervisor of psychotherapy at NYU-Bellevue Hospital Center and co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Hospital Palliative Care Service. He has a long-standing interest in comparative religion\, consciousness research\, and the interface of psychology and spirituality. He maintains a private psychotherapy practice in NYC. \n \nMushrooms On The Mind\, cut paper assemblage by Kim Hamblin \nWe’re bringing another 27 NW Noggin volunteers!! \nCOMMITTED PARTICIPANTS\n1. This group of paintings is\, to varying degrees influenced by my experience here in China\, and in a general sense can be seen as a reflection on the complexity of cultural interactions.” \n \nEasel painters 50×29 cm oil on wood\, 2019\, by Jeff Leake \n“While I have particular things I am thinking while making these\, I am always interested to hear the stories that viewers come up with\, as such these panels are cut into stylized cloud shapes conveying the notion that what we see in the clouds often reveals something true about ourselves.” \n \nIf your brain is in Beijing this summer\, you are hugely welcome to drop by the Ying Gallery\, see art and speak with Jeff\, Jamie and Jiang..! Learn more about Jamie and Jiang’s work below. The exhibition runs through September 30… \n \nJamie M. My work evolves without sketches or preconceived designs\, which results in a spontaneous and forceful effect. The images are then transferred on canvas as a story between reality and the subconscious.” \n \nJiang Peiyuan Graduated from Chelsea college of art in UAL with MA in Fine Art. Jiang Peiyuan has been widely selected of numerous awards and artist residencies including Swatch Art Peace Hotel residency in Shanghai (2019)\, Chris Wainwright Award in Beijing Today Art Museum(2012)\, JohnMoores Painting Prize 2012 (China)\, Bloomberg New contemporaries (2009)\, Jerwood Drawing Prize (2009)\, Whisper Residency in Chinese Art Cerntre Manchester (2009)\, BP young artist award in National Portrait gallery (2008)\, He has been widely exhibitied in many museums including AMNUA\, Nanjing. Today art museum\, Beijing.  shanghai oil painting & sculpture institute. National Portrait Gallery\, London. Wolverhampton Art Gallery\, Wolverhampton. Aberdeen Art Gallery\, Scotland. Aberystwyth Arts Centre\,Welsh. \n \nJiang Peiyuan’s latest works use acrylic paint and acrylic medium to explore painting both as materials and themes. His practice emphasizes the materiality of paint and the process of image making\, which integrates the concepts of painting\, printmaking and sculpture.

SUMMARY:OLD TOWN TALKS: Breaking it down - the abstraction of encoding memories
DESCRIPTION:WHAT: OLD TOWN TALKS  –  Sydney Boutros from Behavioral Neuroscience at OHSU & New/Mixed Media artist Kit Carlton on genetics and memory \nWe did it! LEARN MORE at the link…\nMemory\, Poetry\, Brains\n \n \nWHERE: Floyd’s Old Town Coffee (& Brews!)\, 118 NW Couch St\, Portland\, OR 97209 \nWe did it! Wonderful talk\, art making\, audience and space! \n \n \n \n \n \nWATCH THIS SPACE: Post coming soon! \nWHEN: Tuesday\, October 15\, 6:00 – 8:00pm \n \nRemember Velo Cult?  \nLEARN MORE: Free Art & Science Talks \nWell\, thanks to Nicole Tignor\, we now have a fantastic new venue for FREE art and science collaborative events  –  in Old Town Portland! \n \nBrains and art both welcome at Floyd’s Old Town Coffee! \nProcessed With Darkroom \n \nThis is Our Story\, by Kit Carlton \nWhat is a memory? Memories make us who we are\, connect us with other people and shape everything about “us.” But how does an event\, an interaction\, an idea stick in our head (presumably forever)..? \n \nThe mechanisms in the brain that lead to actual memory formation – and our ability to recall these memories – are messy\, complex\, and unclear. A recent hypothesis that has taken everyone by surprise is the possibility that in order for a memory to be formed\, our DNA has to break into two pieces\, and fix itself\, essentially “writing” memories with our genes. \nLEARN MORE: Physiological Roles of DNA Double-Strand Breaks \nLEARN MORE: Activity-Induced DNA Breaks Govern the Expression of Neuronal Early-Response Genes \n \nKit Carlton \n“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” \n― Eudora Welty \nHumans have long employed various modes of pictography and visual speech to encode and record our personal/cultural histories and memories. Traditionally\, poetry is considered one of the most effective vehicles for conveying and remembering these messages… \n \nKit Carlton (incorporating research images from Sydney Boutros) \nIf a poem is elementally a verbal painting\, can a painting be a pictorial poem? What about an abstract painting? Can a photograph be all three? Come find out as we explore our memories through poetry\, photography\, abstraction  –  and broken DNA. \n \n“Stoked and geeking-out to announce my partnership with @nwnoggin on a collaborative project/talk” – Kit Carlton \n \nKit Carlton \nPlay games\, test your memory\, and explore art and neuroscience at Floyds this fall! \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nGetting really stoked and hyped over this event ya’ll! Bet you can’t tell\, huh? @dysney11 and I will be Breaking it Down—talking about the abstraction of encoding memories on 10/15. The event lasts from 6-8 and you can even hold a real human brain in your hands thanks to the swell folks over @nwnoggin ! I cannot wait! How freaking cool is that? If you can’t make the event please know that the work is up now and on view at Floyd’s Old Town Coffee @oldtowncoffeepdx until the end of October. But if you attend our talk you’ll get the real 411 on the work and how memories are made. Seriously come make some memories with us! Research also highlights the significant ethnic and income differences in youth and lifetime experiences of trauma.\nYet in 1994\, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 11\, which established mandatory minimum sentences for “serious crimes against persons” and required defendants aged 15 and older to be tried as adults. Oregon now has one of the highest youth incarceration rates in the country. Native American\, Hispanic and Black Oregonians are incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates relative to white people. \nTeenagers are not adults. This year we worked with the Hope Partnership and the Oregon Youth Authority to bring NW Noggin volunteers to the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility\, where over 200 boys and young men (ages 12 – 25) are confined. We enjoyed powerful discussions about the brain basis of trauma\, anxiety\, and emotional regulation\, bias in judicial and law enforcement systems\, pathways in psychology for counseling and research\, and what role neuroscientists play\, or might play\, in judicial and legislative reform. MacLaren youth are studying the law and neuroscience in order to bolster a case for changes to Measure 11. \nBuilding excitement and awareness of discoveries\, educational options and careers through arts-integrated outreach across institutional\, state\, federal and generational lines trains new scientists to collaborate\, brings useful\, actionable knowledge to underserved communities\, and increases awareness and support for investment in brain research and the arts. \n \nLEARN MORE: Myelinating at MacLaren \nLEARN MORE: All is in motion\, is growing\, is you \nLEARN MORE: Corrections\, Bias & Brains

From Aaron: “He asked about the neurons/NW Noggin and thought it was absolutely wonderful! He said a lot of PhD students stuck in labs could benefit from building pipe cleaner neurons and helping to educate youth!” \n \nLEARN MORE: Might Microdosing Psychedelics Be Safe and Beneficial? An Initial Exploration \n \n“Thus began a third phase of psychedelic research…Whereas\, in the first phase the participant’s experiences tended to be controlled and delimited\, even if inadvertently\, by the experimenter’s and the subject’s preconceptions\, and in the second phase to be more uncontrolled and wide-ranging in scope\, the emphasis now was on the selection of specific kinds of psychedelic experience and of specific ways to produce and maintain them.” — James Fadiman \n \nAaron\, Cam\, Sai\, Philip and Denesa made pipe cleaner neurons\, heard from leading researchers in the field\, examined real human brains\, and discussed the actions and effects of psychedelics with conference attendees… \n \n \n \n \n \nAuthor\, psychologist\, researcher\, and university co-founder James Fadiman with a rainbow noggin: Can’t think of a more appropriate 3D printed brain! \n \nLEARN MORE about psychedelics from Anthony Bossis… \nA less self-centered and more creative life
