SUMMARY:Noggin @ Sunnyside PPS!
DESCRIPTION:WHAT: Noggin visit with 4th graders at Sunnyside Environmental School\, Portland Public Schools \nWe did it!\nLEARN MORE AT THE LINK…\n \nWhat about the glia?\n \nWHERE: Sunnyside Environmental School\, 3421 SE Salmon St\, Portland\, OR 97214 \nWHEN: Thursday\, November 21\, 2019\, 12:30 – 3:00pm \nContact: Asa Gervich\, 4th Grade Teacher\, Sunnyside Environmental School \n \n12:30 – 1:00pm: Arrival at school office and set up\n1:00 – 2:00pm: First group of 27 4th graders\, Room 205 (Asa Gervich)\n2:00 – 3:00pm: Second group of 28 4th graders\, Room 203 (Jeremy Thomas) \nFrom Asa: “Our 4th graders have background knowledge about how the Prefrontal Cortex\, Amygdala\, and Hippocampus play roles in cultivating self-regulation (see Dr. Dan Siegel hand model\, “flipping one’s lid”\, etc)\, and have also learned a bit about how this idea of “Growth Mindset” is actually supported by brain science\, and what we know about how new neural pathways get formed…” \n \n“Anything that supports these concepts would be awesome – a lot of what we talk about around brains and neuroscience is related to self-regulation (something we’re all working on!) and how new learning happens in the brain. In our brainstorm\, my students were super curious and fascinated by how new learning\, new information\, actually gets wired/stored in their brains! I’m thinking that the pipe-cleaner neuron modeling looks very interesting!” \n \nSunnyside encourages a place-based approach to education. “Place-based education differs from traditional classroom-based education in that it is founded on the belief that students’ local community as one of the most important resources for learning. Place-based education at Sunnyside Environmental school means that part of the student learning experience is spent beyond the walls of the actual school building. Natural spaces\, local neighborhoods\, museums\, our own school yard and university campuses are just a few places where our students learn in place. These locations provide a canvas upon which elements of history\, environmental education\, scientific and biological relationships\, culture\, mathematics\, economy\, literature\, and art are used to help children authentically make meaning of the world around them.” \n \nWe thoroughly agree! We don’t expect K-12 students to come to us; we volunteer and go where people study\, work\, live  –  and listen\, learn\, discover\, make art\, share stories (and brains!)  –  and genuinely connect… \nLEARN MORE: Honest selves @ Hosford \n \nCOMMITTED VOLUNTEERS\nBill Griesar\, NW Noggin/PSU/OHSU\nJeff Leake\, NW Noggin/PSU/Gallery 114\nAaron Eisen\, NW Noggin/NUNM\nPaul Delahanty\, PSU\nMichael Deveney\, PSU\nAngela Hendrix\, NW Noggin\nJacob Schoen\, OHSU
