Using Art and Science to Engage Underserved Communities \nWHERE:  Oregon Arts Education Association conference\, Wilsonville High School\, 6800 SW Wilsonville Rd\, Wilsonville\, OR 97070 \nWHEN:  Saturday\, October 14\, 2017\, 9:00am – noon \nSTEAM Ahead! Using Art and Science to Engage Underserved Communities \n \nSince 2012 NW Noggin has been using art to teach traditionally underserved communities about how their brains work. Working primarily with academically at risk students\, rural populations\, and homeless youth\, we have taken our unique collaboration of art and science from Portland Public Schools to rural Washington and Oregon\, all the way to Washington DC. Join us as we describe some of the challenges and strategies for using arts integration to engage with diverse groups. Our participants benefit from guided lessons\, artistic and scientific perspectives\, and hands-on STEAM activities led by our enthusiastic volunteers. \nLEARN MORE:  2017 OAEA Conference Brochure \nCollagraph Neuron Prints  \nStudent Understanding \nStudents will learn and understand different structures of the neuron and how they function. Some elements of art and process of printmaking will also be covered. \nArts Based Strategies \nPrincipals of design\, observational thinking. \nQuick Overview \nStep 1 :­ Explanation and discussion of neurons\, functions and structors. Brief introduction/demo on collagraph printmaking with card stock/file folders.
