NW Noggin awarded PARC grant!

NW Noggin  received five, $750 travel grants from the Portland Alcohol Research Center (PARC) at OHSU to encourage graduate participation in summer outreach! There is another $1250 available in PARC support for outreach materials and supplies…

FOR OHSU GRADUATE STUDENTS…

We have two remaining $750 Portland Alcohol Research Center (PARC) travel scholarships available this summer, and post-quals (and some pre-quals) students are invited to apply.  For all students:  you will need mentor permission.  Also, be aware that this is NOT technically a teaching practicum, but an outreach activity…

This summer, the NW Noggin outreach program will bring together graduates and undergraduates from OHSU, PSU, and WSU-Vancouver  –  along with art students from the Pacific Northwest College of Art, who will together design and then deliver instruction on the brain and behavior to middle and entering high school students in the Portland Public Schools…  So far we have close to 30 PSU and WSUV undergraduates, and 8 PNCA students ready to head to school!

In addition to instruction, we’ll also bring students up to labs at OHSU, and to meet with working scientists at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.  Kids get excited about science, learn about their own developing brains, and see the entire progression of how to keep learning if this topic grabs them  –  from college through graduate school to jobs in teaching and research.  And you get plenty of real world experience designing academic curricula, and working directly with school professionals, undergraduates and kids..!

A course syllabus for PSU students is available elsewhere on this website  –  the WSU-V and PNCA students enroll in internships, and OHSU participants join as PARC-funded site coordinators (again you’ll earn $750 for travel :).  For pre-quals participants, you’d be paired with site coordinators at Franklin High School (one of you would work with Monique Smith, from Behavioral Neuroscience), and Madison High (one of you would work with a site coordinator from WSUV, Rebecca Wescom).  That way, you’ll have significant support and guidance.  The high school outreach efforts also involve work with PPS science teachers, who will provide additional support in the classroom…

The work/time commitment for PARC paid site coordinators largely corresponds to the dates/times listed on the PSU syllabus.  It’s basically mornings, Mondays through Thursdays, between June 23 and  August 14th (some of the middle school programs continue into August, but Franklin and Madison end by July 31st).

Let me know if you have any questions & cheers!

Bill
